How to factor a quadratic.
Factoring is pattern recognition more than calculation. Once your kid can see the structure of a trinomial, the rest is fast. Study Butler builds that eye by asking what the numbers have to do, rather than printing the factored form.
Here is what that looks like.
Study Butler will not print the answer. It points at the next step and lets your kid take it.
An example. The butler answers the question with a question.
factor x squared plus 7x plus 12.
you need two numbers. what do they have to do together.
multiply to 12 and add to 7?
yes. name them and you are basically done.
Where students get stuck.
The same few mistakes come up again and again. Here is where the butler slows things down.
01Mixing up the sum and the product
Students swap which number is the product and which is the sum, especially under time pressure. Study Butler keeps the two roles separate by asking for each one out loud before writing anything down.
02Negative signs in the middle term
When the middle term is negative but the last term is positive, both factors are negative, and that trips a lot of kids. The butler walks through the sign logic instead of asking them to memorize a rule.
03Leading coefficients other than 1
Factoring 2x² + 7x + 3 needs a different approach than the simple case. Study Butler introduces grouping or the AC method only once the basic pattern is solid, so it builds rather than overwhelms.
Bring the problem they're stuck on.
Type it, say it, or snap a photo. Study Butler walks your kid to the answer one question at a time, so they learn it instead of copying it.
