How to calculate probability.

Probability is a fraction: the outcomes you want over all the outcomes possible. The math is simple once the counting is right, and the counting is where kids slip. Study Butler builds the careful-counting habit first.

Here is what that looks like.

Study Butler will not print the answer. It points at the next step and lets your kid take it.

An example. The butler answers the question with a question.

what's the probability of rolling a 3 on a die.

probability is wanted outcomes over total outcomes. how many ways to roll a 3, and how many faces total.

one 3, six faces.

so what is the fraction. that is your probability.

Where students get stuck.

The same few mistakes come up again and again. Here is where the butler slows things down.

01Miscounting the total outcomes

Getting the denominator wrong throws off the whole answer. Study Butler has your kid count every possible outcome carefully before dividing.

02Confusing wanted outcomes with total outcomes

Which number is the top and which is the bottom matters. The butler keeps the wanted outcomes and the total clearly separated.

03Forgetting probability is between 0 and 1

A probability above 1 or below 0 is a signal something went wrong. Study Butler has your kid sanity-check the answer against that range.

Bring the problem they're stuck on.

Type it, say it, or snap a photo. Study Butler walks your kid to the answer one question at a time, so they learn it instead of copying it.

Questions parents ask.

How do you calculate the probability of an event?
Divide the number of outcomes you want by the total number of possible outcomes. Study Butler has your kid count both carefully before dividing.
Can a probability be greater than 1?
No. A probability ranges from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). An answer outside that range means a counting mistake. The butler uses that as a built-in check.
